How Big is Bangkok Compared to Other Major Cities in the World?

Bangkok is the capital of and largest city in Thailand, with approximately 8 million people living within the city limits. However, how does Bangkok compare in size to some of the other major cities in the world?

Bangkok is quite a sprawling metropolis. To comprehend how big it really is, one must first understand how its geography is laid out. An area of over 1,500 square kilometers, it is divided into 50 districts (known as khet) and a further 178 sub-districts (known as khwaeng). It is home to some of the world’s tallest skyscrapers, massive green spaces and some of the world’s most exciting night markets.

In terms of size, Bangkok ranks 34th in the world. It doesn’t quite compare to the likes of Tokyo or New York City, but it still occupies a considerable amount of area. In fact, it is almost 17 times larger than London, occupying much of central Thailand.

When compared to other large cities in Asia and across the world, Bangkok’s relative size becomes even more understandable. For instance, Jakarta stands as the largest city in Asia and has approximately 10 million people living within its city limits. Shanghai in China comes in second at 24 million people, followed by Tokyo at just over 9 million people.

In terms of landmass, Shanghai reigns as king at 6,340 square kilometers, followed by Tokyo at 2,191 square kilometers. Jakarta occupies an area of over 664 square kilometers and New Delhi stands at around 1483 square kilometers.

Bangkok’s positioning with regards to size can be seen when compared to cities such as Manila (601 square kilometers), Ho Chi Minh City (2,095 square kilometers), Hong Kong (1,106 square kilometers) and Singapore (727 square kilometers).

For anyone visiting Bangkok for the first time, its size can be somewhat overwhelming. Due to the sheer number of things to do, attractions to see and its sheer vastness, Bangkok can be an intimidating experience for first time visitors.

While not as expansive as some of its meta-urban counterparts across the region, Bangkok is a huge and diverse city full of excellent places to visit and fun experiences. With so much to do and see from modern shopping malls with cinemas to temples with age-old Buddhist artifacts, Bangkok offers a range of experiences limited only by imagination.

In general it’s safe to say that Bangkok can be considered a “megacity” in terms of population density and size. It houses millions of people over an area of more than 1,500 square kilometers and provides vast amounts of culture, culinary delights and exciting activities for all its visitors.

For those wishing to visit Thailand or the rest of Southeast Asia, Bangkok should definitely be at the top of your list!
